President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday morning condemned Monday’s attack in Zamfara State that left 8 dead.
The attack on Monday occurred at Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in Talata
Mafara, Zamfara State, after one of the victims reportedly blasphemed
the Prophet Muhammad. The angry mob, suspected to be students of the
Polytechnic, beat the alleged blasphemer and subsequently burned down
the victim’s house, killing all of its occupants.Mr. Buhari expressed his shock over the attack on his official Twitter page on Tuesday morning.
“I received news of the mob killings in Zamfara with great dismay,” he said. “It is barbaric and unacceptable. I assure that the law will take its course.”
The attack was perpetrated on the same day U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Nigeria for an official State Department visit.
“Under my watch we will work to ensure that there is no violence in the name of religion, ethnicity, or in any guise whatsoever,” the president said.
At the time of reporting, the police have yet to arrest the perpetrators, who are suspected to be students. The Polytechnic administrators have since shut down the school until further notice.
