Compared to what obtains in many places
nowadays, the kingship institution used to command a lot of respect in
the past in Yorubaland. The Kabiyesi, which simply means the unquestionable, were revered by their subjects.
Then, an Oba could do anything in his
domain without anybody questioning him. But things have changed. While
subjects now drag monarchs to court for different reasons, some
unfortunate ones are dealt blows and attacked with cudgels by aggrieved
subjects.
