2014 has been a good year for this column…and Wizkid

With a happy heart. Sitting in the new urgency of 2015, staring at my computer in my Lagos news room, I begin to get some perspective.
It’s been a long fulfilling and ‘Joey’s Monday Musings’ filled year 2014. Today is the first Monday in 2014 and I lack new inspiration to dissect the happenings in our celebrity-filled world, and bring you fresh perspective.

This isn’t because of a lack of ample raw material. Of course not! It will be outrageous to concede that our Nigerian celebrities have not being doing what they do best; being celebrities. Tonto Dikeh has been in fine form this Christmas, hugging the headlines with sloppy kisses and a lover that bears the name of every kid’s favourite gorilla.
She is making out….(and getting laid I hope) with a big scary ape. Heaven bless her hustle, and King Kong.
It’s been a year of unforgettable highs and lows and in-betweens, and I, Joey Akan, have been right here, giving you the good angles of reasoning. Wizkid and Davido once had a ‘media’ beef, and fans began a stupid comparison of their qualities. It is stupid because I said so here.
Wizkid on his part has been a constant feature in these Monday morning frolicking with my brain. He once took upon two people in a week, and made meal of them. The angry Samklef was given a dose of hypocritical love, and the young upstart from Baseline Music, Saeon Moruda, got a verbal sarcastic whipping. I was in on it too, and trust me, I went with the big dude.
Big small dude I mean.
It hasn’t all been beef and inter-celebrity wars. We have also had reason to connect with the deepest parts of our beings and come to terms with death and grief. 2face Idibia was given reasons to be thankful while he cried his heart away for his Dad. Poor guy. I wish I could reach out right now and pinch his cheeks. Too bad I’m in Akwa Ibom. Too bad.
We have also had Ebola come in and sneak away with the life of 8 Nigerians. We as a nation became united in a single struggle, pushing past all the self-created barriers that divide us all as a people, and together held hands and prayed. I captured that moment here…but not without some stick from the fans.
God I love the fans and the critics. You guys make all these effort count.
And then there was comedy. Our entertainers decided to carve a new career path for themselves, and it wasn’t exactly, er, well, entertainment inclined. They discovered Politics! Julius Agwu aimed too high and ultimately fell. But trust me; I already saw that coming from a century away. He is an adorable clown. We’ll rather he keeps it that way.
Kate Henshaw did her best to portray the good girl look, and by heaven, I really wanted to hug her tight and call her ‘mommy’, but not give her the reins of leadership. She instils a feeling of warm love in me. But we also need trust and confidence in her to make it work. My big mouth did its magic there too.
And Tony Tetuila, dude just was a huge lesson in conservatism.
Looking back, this year has served us well with the best recipe to keep us rolling in laughter, tears, and disgust.
I’ll be back next week, for better for worse. Here's to 2015.
