John Obi Mikel scored his first ever UEFA Champions League goal in
Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night. The Nigerian
international retained his spot in the starting line-up from Saturday’s
2-1 loss to Newcastle United and was joined in midfield by Nemanja
Matic.
Mourinho’s men went two goals up thanks to strikes from Andre Schurrle and Cesc Fabregas but the Portuguese side pulled one back through Jonathan Silva in the second half.
However, Mikel restored the Blues’ two-goal advantage with a tap in
from three-yards out for his first ever European goal, after a flick on
from Gary Cahill.
The goal will do wonders for Mikel’s confidence after he was heavily
criticised for Chelsea’s loss to Newcastle but Super Eagles teammate,
Sone Aluko, believes the Blues midfielder is still underrated.
“Massively underrated in my opinion amongst Nigerians, there’s a reason he’s been at Chelsea for so long! It’s not easy. He sabi!,” Aluko tweeted.
