Johannesburg - Two people died when a bus collided with a truck near Welkom on Saturday morning, Free State police said.
At least 56 others were taken to hospital with various injuries, Warrant Office Malebo Khosana said.
The Intercape bus, with 56 passengers on board, was en-route to Cape Town when the incident happened after midnight.

It is alleged that the truck driver stopped to find out why a bakkie had stopped in the middle of Virginia Road, when the bus rammed into the rear of the truck.
"The bus driver and his assistant were killed on impact. Jaws of life were used to free them from the wreckage. Fifty-six people were taken to hospital in Welkom," said Khosana.
He could not provide further details on their injuries.
Khosana said the bakkie driver had stopped after seeing what he thought was a person lying on the road. He soon discovered it was a luggage bag and not a person.
