The Presidency has defended the November 20 invasion of the National Assembly by police officers saying that they acted rightly.
Legislators were forced to scale the gate of the complex yesterday after a blockade was mounted by policemen and Secret Service agents.
Presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe said that the security personnel were only doing their duty while denying that they acted on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Okupe said:
“The whole scenario as we witnessed it is rather unfortunate . We wish that at all times national interest should supersede all other interests including personal and political interests.”
“Once there is infraction in the law, the police has to come in and the IGP does not need to take permission from the presidency first. He acted in the discharge of his duty. The IGP did not invade the National Assembly.”
Meanwhile, the police force has said that its actions were as a result of an intelligence report which warned of an impending invasion by hoodlums.
