The Nigerian army has stated that it has regained control of Chibok in Borno, which was previously captured by Boko Haram members.
The terrorists captured the town, which is home to the over 200 abducted schoolgirls, on Friday, November 14.
The army said in a statement signed by Colonel Timothy Antigha, the Chief of Staff, Department of Army Public Relations:
“The
Nigerian Army troops recaptured Chibok at about 7pm last (Saturday)
night from Boko Haram insurgents. The town is now secured. Exploitation
and mop-up operations are ongoing. More details will follow as soon as
they are available.”
However, an elder of the Chibok community, Pogu Bitrus
told AFP that the town was recaptured by a joint team of soldiers and
members of the Civilian Joint Task Force. Pogu said the vigilantes
fought inside the town while the soldiers “stayed outside the town to
mop up the insurgents trying to escape”.
