WHY NIGERIA MAY CONTINUE TO BE DIFFICULT TO GOVERN

 

Our country Nigeria could better be described as a Three – in –one Sovereign Nation, United with Faith and bonded by Destiny.

This is because, in spite of all the ethnic differences, the people are held together though not without occasional ethnic clashes which led to the civil war that shook the country to its root shortly after independence.

On getting over this attempt, Nigerians learnt how to tolerate and themselves better, and built respect for each other’s view.

The situation of things in the present dispensation demands careful management to avoid a disastrous end to the nation’s democracy.

The present dispensation has witnessed serious political misery, bloody ethnic clashes more then ever before.

However a critical assessment of the contents of our constitution would reveal how unreliable it is.

And how much its application could continue to ignite trouble. In fact it may not be too much to term the constitution as a geg of gun powder. This is because each every time the constitution is applied to broker peace, it ended up complicating it the more.

Evidence of this, is the creation of Local Government by States as empowered by the constitution while the same also constitution subjected it to the approval of the Federal Government.

This has since generated controversies, misconception and outright face off between States and the Federal Government.

An example of such constitution is that of the United State of America which was written in 1787 and adopted in 1789 and for over two centuries has since remained in force.

The constitution of a nation is regarded as the basic instrument and supreme law of the land. It is used for guiding evolution of government and provides the basis for political stability, economic growth and social progress

It is respected and regarded as the ultimate document.

A constitution must therefore be dependable and reliable.

Since Nigeria secured her independence over four decades ago, the nations constitution has  been re-written and amended over and over again and in most times for selfish reasons to satisfy the powers that be. As a result which today the constitution has almost lost it’s value.

One would have expected our legislators, recognizing its contradiction and weakness to make it a priority to ensure the document is made sound in it’s basic elements for generations yet unborn, but no visible attempt by these representatives of the people’s voices to address the issue.

It is our opinion that until this constitution is made permanently to wear a human face, the country might continue to be difficult to govern dynasty will keep the family flag flying. Murtala Yar’adua, a 1994 Graduate of Business Management and 1997 Masters Degree holder in Financial management had served as Director of Intel Services Ltd, Port-Harcourt and Hamada Holdings Nigeria Ltd., Kaduna before his recent appointment into Jonathan’s cabinet obviously to compensate the family in appreciation of their contribution toward the Political and economic development of the nation.
