With peaches, look for dark spots—that’s where sunbeams hit the fruit. With mangos and oranges, it’s all about aroma: the more fragrant, the sweeter the fruit. But don’t try sniffing an avocado—the clue to a ripe one is hidden under the button of its stem. If green, it’s good to go. But brown means it’s probably overripe and squishy.
