Three
years after flood ravaged Osun State, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has
assured the residents that the phenomenon will never reccur in the
state.
Aregbesola, who spoke at the
inauguration of free surgical mission by his administration on Thursday
in Iwo, said proactive measures had been taken to check flooding.
He recalled that shortly before the
advent of his administration in 2010, flood had wreaked havoc in Osun,
stressing that widening and channelisation of rivers, streams and canals
by his administration stopped its recurrence.
Aregbesola said, “Osun will never
experience flooding again. What we have done is comprehensive. It is a
solution to flooding. We took our time in de-silting our waterways and
clearing of drainages.
“Shortly before we came into power,
there was massive flooding, which swept people away. We have decided and
taken action that this shall never happen in Osun again. Since we came
on board, Osun has never witnessed flooding.”
Linking environmental sanitation to
personal hygiene, Aregbesola said flooding had the potential of
spreading water-borne diseases across the state.
